West Texas Intermediate crude for January delivery added 93 cents to $76.51 on the New York Merc, while Brent for January added $1.03 to $80.36 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $16.85 to WTI ($59.66), unchanged. Natural gas for December lost 22.3 cents to $4.26. The TSX energy index added 4.78 points to close at 266.71.

Talisman Energy Inc. (TLM) added 19 cents to $6.99 on 5.21 million shares. Along with joint venturer Ecopetrol SA (ECP: $28.74), it has tested the Nueva Esperanza-1 well at Colombia's block CPO-9 at 910 barrels of oil a day. This marks their second discovery on the block. The first was the Akacias field in late 2010, when they tested the Akacias-1 well at 1,280 barrels a day, after which they put it on a long-term test at 1,600 barrels a day. The well is currently producing 1,800 barrels a day, according to Talisman's CFO, Paul Smith, who presented at the BofA Merrill Lynch Global Energy Conference in Miami last week. Mr. Smith attributed the "extraordinary" results at Akacias to high bottom-hole temperatures and "excellent" reservoir quality. The field currently has 10 wells on long-term test, and they have produced at a peak of 11,000 barrels a day and are currently over 9,000 barrels a day. The Nueva Esperanza structure is beside and on the same trend as Akacias.
