New York spot gold gained $1.40 to $1,252.70 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 7.93 points to 812.05 while the TSX Gold Index rose 1.24 points to 210.11. Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) led the advance. It jumped 42 cents to $4.67 on 6.48 million shares. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) was among the retreaters. It fell five cents to $15.52 on 1.14 million shares.
Claude Lemasson's Eastmain Resources Inc. (ER), up two cents to 50 cents on 527,000 shares, has received assays of up to 14.1 grams of gold per tonne over 6.2 metres at its Eau Claire deposit on the Clearwater project in the James Bay region of Quebec. That was one of several hits that occurred at depths of less than 100 metres, a region that the company calls "near-surface," although the others had lesser grades or shorter intervals. Eastmain also encountered noteworthy gold grades in what it calls "shallow underground" tests -- depths of up to 300 metres -- including 47.4 grams per tonne over 1.5 metres and 26.8 grams per tonne over 2.5 metres. (Gold miners and stock promoters usually avoid the word "deep" until the depths approach one kilometre.)
