New York spot gold fell $1.30, closing at $1,264.40 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 4.43 points to 786.14 while the TSX Gold Index dropped 4.24 points to 219.83. Most Canadian gold miners retreated today. Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) was an exception. It gained eight cents to $6.85 on 1.64 million shares. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) dropped 33 cents to $4.35 on 1.47 million shares.

Claude Lemasson's Eastmain Resources Inc. (ER), down two cents to 78 cents on 290,000 shares, has received assays of up to 11.5 grams of gold per tonne over 13.5 metres at its Clearwater project in the James Bay region of Quebec. The assays are from nine holes spanning the first 3,000 metres of a big 63,300-metre drill program centred on the Eau Claire deposit. All the holes yielded gold, with the best results coming from an infill hole at Eau Claire, although an exploration hole into the Snake Lake target, 1,800 metres to the east of Eau Claire, yielded 12.2 grams per tonne over 1.5 metres. Mr. Lemasson, president and chief executive officer, says the "aggressive resource definition program" at Eau Claire is a significant step in advancing the project, but he is also encouraged with the mineralization identified in the Snake Lake target.
