New York spot gold gained $2.70 to $1,323.20 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.40 point to 805.93 while the TSX Gold Index rose 3.27 points to 243.27. Canadian gold miners moved little today, although Goldcorp Inc. (G) gained 50 cents to $21.25 on 3.84 million shares and Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) lost 44 cents to $30.59 on 1.04 million shares.

Richard Clark's Orca Gold Inc. (ORG), up 4.5 cents to 36.5 cents on 304,000 shares, has "made key strategic changes" to its board and management. Mr. Clark, a major shareholder, a lawyer with a geological background and a director since 2013, is now the company's chief executive officer. He takes over from Hugh Stuart, who will remain president of the company. Mr. Clark has also given up his role as chairman; his replacement will be Simon Jackson.

Orca Gold says Mr. Clark will direct overall corporate strategy and co-ordinate management's initiatives toward developing Orca's Block 14 project in Sudan. Meanwhile, Mr. Stuart will direct the day-to-day activities of Orca, continue exploration at Block 14 and assess other growth opportunities. (There is a difference in their job descriptions, but it is so subtle that Mr. Clark and Mr. Stuart will have to be the best of friends.) There is no indication of how the pair will split the $331,000 that Mr. Stuart earned from both roles last year; more likely, Orca will be shelling out more under the new structure. As both men no doubt know, when in Sudan, which is an Islamic country, good behaviour is important. Women can be stoned; crucifixion, hanging, flogging and public whipping are all legal punishments.
