New York spot gold gained $49.60 to $1,246.40 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 3.01 points to 508.32. The TSX Gold Index gained 10.15 points to 177.27 with Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) leading the way, gaining $2.57 to $49.04 on 3.25 million shares. Kinross Gold Corp. (K) leapt 49 cents to $4.07 on 24.85 million shares.

Greg Smith's Calibre Mining Corp. (CXB), up two cents to nine cents on 1.49 million shares, has received assays of up to 2.89 grams of gold over 71 metres at La Luz in Nicaragua. Embedded within the broad interval was a 26-metre zone averaging 6.39 grams per tonne. The cost of the program is being covered by Centerra Gold Inc. (CG: $6.87), which can earn a 70-per-cent interest by spending $7-million before mid-2019. Mr. Smith, Calibre's president and chief executive officer, says Centerra and his company have been "aggressively exploring" La Luz, defining high-priority drill targets on the old Cerro Potosi-Cerro Aeropuerto trend, and also along the new Cerro Coyol-Tiburon trend. (The latest assays are from two holes drilled at Cerro Aeropuerto.)
