New York spot gold closed up $24.30 to $1,137.80 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 0.33 point to 525.56 while the TSX Gold Index jumped 8.64 points to 128.74. Canadian gold miners posted big gains today, led by Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM), which surged $3.85 to $36.60 on 2.13 million shares. Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) had an equally strong day, gaining 25 cents to $2.40 on 9.97 million shares.
Robert Quartermain's Pretium Resources Inc. (PVG), up 61 cents to $8.53 on 1.5 million shares, has a new director: Dr. Nicole Adshead-Bell. She is an addition, not a replacement, appointed because she "brings relevant industry experience to the company" as it evolves from a developer to a gold producer, according to Mr. Quartermain, president and chief executive officer. Dr. Adshead-Bell was previously with Sun Valley Gold LLC -- a private hedge fund sponsor, not a junior gold miner -- where she was a director of mining research. Before that she was an investment banker and sell-side mining analyst.
