New York spot gold lost $14.50 to $1,140.40 Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 8.05 points to 526.54, while the TSX Gold Index lost 3.56 points to 126.55.
Gold miners in Canada followed bullion down. Goldcorp Inc. (G) lost 36 cents to $18.39, Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) lost 18 cents to $9.39, Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) dropped 20 cents to $5.06 and Detour Gold Inc. (DGC) fell 42 cents to $13.67.
Patrick Sheridan Jr.'s Guyana Goldfields Inc. (GUY) dropped 40 cents to $3.64 on 498,000 shares. The stock has fallen from an intraday year-high of $4.40 earlier this month, when the company announced it had poured its first gold at the Aurora mine in Guyana. It took three years, $250-million and two mine plans, but Aurora is finally in production. Investors await news of the next gold pour. The company aims to produce 50,000 ounces of gold there this year. Mr. Sheridan took advantage of the higher stock price last week, exercising an option to buy 70,000 shares at $3.22. He then sold the shares at $4.35 for a quick $90,000 profit, which will nicely supplement his $455,000-a-year salary.
