New York spot gold closed down $5 to $1,094.50 Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 10.77 points to 581.77 and the TSX Gold Index lost 5.08 points to 119.55.

Gold miners in Canada had another down day. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) dropped $1.38 to $29.88, Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) fell 79 cents to $10.72, Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) fell 14 cents to $4.18 and Kinross Gold Corp. (K) slipped two cents to $2.20.

Scott Drever's SilverCrest Mines Inc. (SVL) rose 11 cents to $1.07 on 13.08 million shares, after receiving a $1.11-a-share takeover offer from Keith Neumeyer's First Majestic Silver Corp. (FR: $4.02). First Majestic is after SilverCrest's Santa Elena mine in Mexico, where better-than-expected silver and gold production has prompted the company to boost its 2015 target to 5.1 million ounces of silver equivalent, up from 4.4 million ounces. SilverCrest also has $30-million in cash, $5-million of which will be spun out to a new company that will continue exploring at SilverCrest's handful of silver-gold properties in northern Mexico. Chief operating officer Eric Fier will take over as president of the spinout. The board will remain the same.
