New York spot gold closed up 20 cents to $1,188 Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange slipped 1.34 points to 690.62, while the TSX Gold Index added 1.23 points to 163.52.
Canadian gold miners ended the day mostly up. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) rose seven cents to $12.85, Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) rose two cents to $14.58, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) gained 47 cents to $39.08 and Kinross Gold Corp. (K) remained unchanged at $2.85.
Iamgold Corp. (IMG) slipped one cent to $2.51 on 1.85 million shares, after reporting an evacuation at its Westwood gold mine in Quebec on Monday night. The company blames a "localized event" of falling ground, and says gold production was not interrupted. It has left its Westwood production guidance at 130,000 ounces of gold. The miner already had to evacuate Westwood once this year, in January after a rock burst that caused falling ground. The mine is young, having reached commercial production last summer, and seems to be going through some growing pains. All-in cash costs were an unprofitable $1,507 an ounce in the first quarter. Iamgold is trying to bring them down to $1,110.
