New York spot gold closed down $3.20 to $1,198 Wednesday, falling with the U.S. dollar which slipped after a weak report about home sales. The TSX Venture Exchange dropped 9.58 points to 771.06 and the TSX Gold Index lost 3.34 points to 154.92.

Canada's gold miners had a down day. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) lost 30 cents to $14.53, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) dropped $1.03 to $29.26, Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) dropped 14 cents to $4.71 and Iamgold Corp. (IMG) slipped seven cents to $2.65.

Gold miners are the most at risk -- more so than copper or iron ore miners -- when it comes to Ebola, according to a website called SNL Metals & Mining. It is not obvious what SNL stands for but the answer is nothing. In 1987, according to the website, the "N" was originally to be an ampersand, but that was not allowed so the company cleverly resorted to the "N" instead. SNL Metals said there a number of gold miners that are heavily reliant on production from West African countries, and it proceeds to list several of them including Teranga Gold Corp. (TGZ), Banro Corp. (BAA: $0.165) and Endeavour Mining Corp. (EDV: $0.52).
