New York spot gold closed up $7 to $1,687 Thursday, recovering from an early morning slide. It fell on reports that United States housing starts rose sharply in December. Bullion rallied later in the session, when worries over American debts resurfaced. In Australia, a man has reportedly found a 177-ounce gold nugget with a handheld metal detector. The area has been searched many times before, but not with such a state-of-the-art detector. In October, Australia media outlets made a big fuss over a 2,116-ounce gold nugget, which turned out to be lead covered in gold paint. The world's largest gold nugget found with a metal detector is the 875-ounce Hand of Faith. It, too, was found in Australia, but in 1980. Goldbugs can visit it and pay their respects at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
