The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Wednesday was a negative 51-58-148. The TSX Venture Exchange gained one point to 677 while polished diamond prices slipped 0.2 per cent. Robert Gannicott and Brendan Bell's Dominion Diamond Corp. (DDC) gained 41 cents to $13.63 on 165,000 shares, its best day since early May. Dominion traded at $15.98 in late April. There has been no unexpected news to account for the price swings.

Richard Atkinson and Victor Tanaka's Fjordland Exploration Inc. (FEX), down one-half cent to 5.5 cents on 617,000 shares, is expanding its diamond program in the Athabasca district of northwestern Saskatchewan. The company is acquiring an option on two blocks of ground from Peter Dasler's CanAlaska Uranium Inc. (CVV: $0.59). Mr. Dasler's company triggered some promotional ripples when it acquired large blocks of ground in the area in mid-February. It made a much larger splash when it signed De Beers Canada as an optionee on much of its ground last week. (De Beers can earn a 90-per-cent interest in 17,400 hectares of claims by spending $20.4-million over seven years, although CanAlaska can limit its co-venturer's interest to just 70 per cent by contributing its share of exploration expenses once De Beers earns a 70-per-cent stake.)
