In a footnote to the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada's long-ago settled case against former broker Catherine Jones, a hearing will take place on May 10, 2017, over Ms. Jones's unpaid legal bill. Law firm Harper Grey LLP claims that Ms. Jones failed to pay for the services of the lawyer who represented her during an IIROC case, Rod Anderson. The firm is seeking court-ordered payment. Ms. Jones, however, claims that Mr. Anderson was negligent in his efforts.
The dispute follows an IIROC case that Ms. Jones settled on Jan. 16, 2012. The regulator had accused her of guaranteeing the return of a client's $50,000 investment and of unauthorized trading. She paid $23,500 to settle the allegations without a hearing and made restitution of $35,000 to the client.
