The National Post reports in its Thursday, Jan. 11, edition that Canada seems to be deliberately fanning the prospect that the North American free-trade agreement is on the brink. The Post's Terrence Corcoran writes that unnamed sources in Ottawa, cited by Bloomberg and Reuters, are saying they are increasingly convinced that President Donald Trump is about to pull the plug on NAFTA. Canada is feeding the gloom as it unleashes a trade dispute claim that, Mr. Corcoran says, amounts to a direct attack on U.S. trade practices. Canada's complaint to the World Trade Organization cites U.S. abuse of trade rules related to the softwood lumber dispute. With all the negative dust swirling around the negotiations, it would be foolish to assume that all the bluster and threats and warnings are nothing but spin and hardball tactics. On the other hand, Mr. Corcoran says hardball has always been part of trade talks and disputes. So for President Trump, we have seen that he likes to play a rough game on the way to a deal. To be optimistic for a moment, Mr. Corcoran says let us assume that Canada is now doing the same.
