The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, July 24, edition that last week several Conservative MPs aired their criticisms of the $10.5-million Omar Khadr payout in The Wall Street Journal and Fox News. A Globe editorial notes that senior Liberals cried foul, suggesting that in criticizing the Khadr deal in front of the neighbours, the Conservatives were undermining Canada's bargaining position in North American free-trade agreement negotiations. The Globe notes that the Liberals are expert at using American media to their advantage, so why not the Conservatives too. The Globe adds, however, that the Tories on the substance of the Khadr case could not be more wrong. Nonetheless, The Globe says the Tories have every right to talk about it outside of Canada's borders. The Conservatives are not bringing up the Khadr settlement in order to cause the NAFTA negotiations to fail. The only people making the Khadr-NAFTA linkage are Liberals, says The Globe. It says there is simply no sign that the Conservative Party is using the Khadr case to undermine the existing pact or any hopes for renegotiation. Conservatives are criticizing the Khadr settlement because they disagree with it, as is their right.
