The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Jan. 23, edition that BMO Nesbitt Burns analyst Mark Wilde sees no evidence of a "wall of wood." The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Wilde has not seen any "real" evidence of a big increase in Canadian exports in the three months since the expiration of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. Mr. Wilde says lumber prices have "held up relatively well." He upgraded his ratings for West Fraser Timber ($45.64), Canfor ($15.44) and Interfor ($10.93) to "outperform" from "market perform." He says: "All three firms have varying degrees of diversification in their lumber portfolio -- mitigating British Columbia log issues. ... Considering the depth and duration of the United States housing downturn, balance sheets are remarkably strong, especially for West Fraser and Canfor." Mr. Wilde did not change his target price for the stocks. The BMO stockpicker targets Canfor at $25, Interfor at $16 and West Fraser at $57. Mr. Wilde says, "Based on current stock prices, this represents an upside of 35 per cent for West Fraser, 83 per cent for Canfor and 62 per cent on Interfor. Mr. Wilde says, "Our top pick is Canfor."
