The Sun's Derrick Penner writes their lobby group, the Independent Wood Processors Association of B.C., argues they have been squeezed out by changes to the province's timber auction process, export taxes under the Canada-U.S. Softwood Lumber Agreement and consolidation that has put forest tenures into fewer hands. "We could rebuild," said Russ Cameron, president of the Independent Wood Processors Association of B.C. "If we can get some of that (Crown-controlled) wood and access to the U.S. (market), we'll employ a pile of people and do that." The province has put a priority on getting more value out of a Crown timber harvest expected to decline following the mountain pine beetle infestation. Even the major primary-sector companies such as Canfor or Western Forest Products, which makes it difficult for his members to win. "How are you going to compete against a Western or a West Fraser when they've got the infrastructure and they can handle all diameters and grades?" said IWPA president Russ Cameron.
