The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, July 10, edition that RBC Dominion Securities analyst Paul Quinn says Asian demand for North American lumber has proven more resilient than expected.
The Globe's Darcy Keith and Tim Shufelt write in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Quinn says, "While there has been much talk in the trade of a slowdown in Chinese log/lumber demand, we believe this has been somewhat exaggerated on the lumber side."
The outlook for both Canfor ($23.88) and West Fraser Timber ($52.83) has improved accordingly, says Mr. Quinn.
He says, "Canfor's time has come." He upgraded the stock to "outperform" from "sector perform," while maintaining a $27 target. Mr. Quinn says, "We believe the recent share price correction provides an attractive entry point." He also upgraded West Fraser to "outperform" from "sector perform," and raised his target to $60 from $56. He says, "We prefer West Fraser to ... Canfor, as West Fraser has a greater lumber geographic production footprint."
GlobeInvest Capital managing director Peter Brieger said buy Canfor in The Globe on March 24. It was then worth $26.50. Pyramis Global Advisors said buy West Fraser in The Globe on Feb. 17, when it was worth $53.96.
