The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, April 18, edition that getting Alberta's oil resources to new markets is the centrepiece of premier-designate Jason Kenney's vow to lift the province out of its economic funk. The Globe's Barrie McKenna writes, however, that the path Mr. Kenney has laid out could make that goal virtually unachievable. He has vowed to roll back the NDP government's price on carbon and scrap a plan to ban coal-fired electricity by 2030. Mr. McKenna says a go-ahead on Trans Mountain should be an easy call. The Grits have repeatedly said that they will do whatever it takes to get the project started. The project, however, is conditional on Alberta being in sync with Ottawa's carbon-tax plan. If Mr. Kenney kills the plan, Mr. Trudeau will have no choice but to impose a carbon tax in Alberta -- as his government already has in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. For its part, Ottawa has no incentive to play nice with Alberta on Trans Mountain while Mr. Kenney is bashing a central piece of the Liberal government's agenda. Mr. Kenney has also talked about reviving TransCanada's Energy East project and Enbridge's Northern Gateway project.
