The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, April 12, edition that the Bank of Canada on Friday named Carolyn Wilkins to replace outgoing senior deputy governor Tiff Macklem, making her the first woman to hold the No. 2 policymaker role. The Post's Gordon Isfeld and Armina Ligaya write that the appointment of Ms. Wilkins is also notable because she does not come from the existing pool of deputy governors, who are the usual suspects to fill the senior position. Ms. Wilkins begins her seven-year term as the No. 2 policymaker on the bank's six-member governing council on May 2. Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz said he was "absolutely delighted" with the selection of Ms. Wilkins as senior deputy governor. The No. 2 governor has a role similar to a chief operating officer. However, the BOC recently hived off some of those administrative duties to a separate position. Front-runners for the No. 2 job included deputy governors Agathe Cote and Timothy Lane. Ms. Cote has been deputy governor at the Bank of Canada since July, 2010, and is a well-regarded economist. McGill University associate professor of economic policy Chris Ragan says Ms. Wilkins "may be an excellent choice."
