The Vancouver Sun reports in its Tuesday edition the federal government has sanctioned a McDonald's franchise owner in Victoria as it investigates alleged misuses of the Temporary Foreign Worker program. The Sun's Tara Carman writes the franchise owner, Nasib Services, operates three McDonald's restaurants in Victoria and is alleged to have hired foreign workers in place of Canadians. B.C. Registry documents lists Glen Donald Bishop as director of Nasib Services. The feds will not permit the Victoria franchise to use the Temporary Foreign Worker program and has suspended all pending applications. Employment Minister Jason Kenney said in a statement Nasib provided the government with "false, misleading or inaccurate information." If the Victoria franchise owner lied in the original application to employ temporary foreign workers, the Canada Border Services Agency could lay charges under the Immigration Act. Penalties for such a prosecution include up to five years in prison and fines up to $100,000. The program has been under increased scrutiny after abuses, including a case last year in which the Royal Bank of Canada displaced some Canadian workers after contracting out IT services to a foreign supplier.
