The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 2, edition that former prime minister Jean Chretien does not see much of a difference between the North American free-trade agreement and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The Globe's Campbell Clark writes that Mr. Chretien thinks President Donald Trump's crowing over the new deal shows he cannot be taken seriously. In Mr. Chretien's forthcoming book, My Stories, My Times, he say Mr. Trump is damaging America's reputation, perhaps endangering the long postwar run of peace and prosperity. Mr. Chretien derides Mr. Trump for "proclaiming a return to isolationism," as he mocks the President's declarations of success. "He was supposed to be out [of NAFTA] weeks after he became President," Mr. Chretien said. "And now he changed the name, and it's the best deal ever." Mr. Chretien said Mr. Trump cannot be taken seriously. Gordon Ritchie, Canada's deputy chief negotiator in the first free-trade talks with the U.S., concurs with Mr. Chretien's view that not much changed, even if Mr. Trump tells his most "gullible" supporters it is a revolution. Mr. Chretien mocked Mr. Trump's response as part of the U.S.'s political need to declare victory.
