The National Post reports in its Thursday, Sept. 13, edition that Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland continues to say there is goodwill and flexibility on all sides of the North American free-trade agreement negotiations. The Post's John Ivison writes that he doubts President Donald Trump will have any goodwill to offer once he hears Ms. Freeland compared him on Monday to a rogue's gallery of autocrats that included Syria's Bashar al-Assad. We can debate Mr. Trump's foibles and shortcomings, but Bashar al-Assad he is not. Mr. Ivison says comparing the United States President to a murdering despot is irresponsible. Unless the Trudeau government has already concluded that Mr. Trump's demands on access to Canada's dairy industry, the dispute-resolution system and cultural exemptions on media ownership and content are so unacceptable they would be better off politically walking away without a deal and campaigning in the next election on having stood up to Mr. Trump. Mr. Ivison says that certainly seemed to be the tenor of Justin Trudeau's remarks ahead of the Liberal caucus retreat in Saskatoon Wednesday, where he congratulated Freeland for "standing up for Canadian workers and defending our interests."
