The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Magna International is diving into autonomous-vehicle components with a
plan to introduce an autonomous-driving electronic platform
that can be used on existing vehicles
as well as future electric and
hybrid cars, and trucks.
The Globe's Greg Keenan writes that the autonomous-driving platform
will enable vehicles to
engage in what is known as Level
4 self-driving, defined as vehicles
that can perform all safety functions
with the driver's only function
being to plug in navigation
or destination co-ordinates.
Vehicles with Level 4 capability
are still in the testing stage. Vehicles
with some autonomous features
today such as
intelligent cruise control, lane-keep
assist and others are classified
as Level 1 or 2 vehicles.
Magna says
the new platform allows designers complete freedom on
both the interior and exterior of
the vehicle because it does not
take up cargo space in the rear of
a vehicle or space in the main
compartment.
Magna says the platform will make it easier
for drivers to interact with autonomous
driving controls because it includes a button
system that is similar to cruise-control
switches in current vehicles.
