The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, May 6, edition that battery-powered driverless cars that steer themselves are more than a decade away from becoming reality, say senior executives at Magna International ($51.98). The Globe's Greg Keenan writes that the executives are, nonetheless, gearing up Magna's research and development efforts to make sure the company plays a role in the auto industry's transformation. Electric vehicles will represent just 2 per cent of the vehicle market by 2027, while fully autonomous vehicles will not be common until 2030, say the executives. Chief executive officer Don Walker says, "I personally don't think some of the changes people are talking about are coming as fast as you might read about." Mr. Walker says the idea of an electric vehicle in every multivehicle driveway by 2024 is "not even remotely possible." Electric vehicles might represent 3 per cent of the market over all by 2030, Mr. Walker says. Magna and its automaker customers are spending tens of billions of dollars developing battery-powered vehicles, fuel-cell-powered vehicles and better hybrids in order to meet new emission regulations that come into effect early in the 2020s.
