The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that sharing a top executive job is not unheard of in Canada. The Globe's Richard Blackwell writes that some of Canada's most prominent firms have had two people at the top. Sometimes the arrangement can last for years, while in other cases the sharing of power is short-lived. Mr. Blackwell says Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis are the best known co-chief executive officers. They worked closely to run Research in Motion, now called BlackBerry. They stepped down when the company was in freefall in 2012. Andre Desmairais and Paul Desmarais are still co-CEOs of Montreal-based conglomerate Power Corp. of Canada, in an arrangement that has lasted almost two decades. For 13 years, Richard Gelfond and Bradley Wechsler shared the role of CEO at Imax. In 2009, however, Mr. Gelfond became the solo CEO and Mr. Wechsler took over as chairman. Don Walker and Siegfried Wolf shared the CEO job at Magna Internationsl for five years, until Mr. Wolf left in 2010 to work for a Russian automaker. David Jolley and David Galloway were co-CEOs of Torstar between 1988 and 1994. However, Torstar's board eventually found the division unworkable and gave the job to Mr. Galloway alone.
