The Globe and Mail attempts to identify large-cap stocks on the move outside of the materials and energy sectors in its Thursday, Aug. 25, edition. The Globe's Ian Tam writes in the Number Cruncher column that as the market rally continues in Canada, investors may question how much longer oil and gold prices are going to prop up our index. Mr. Tam looked for companies that have exhibited strong price momentum and short-term earnings growth. He looked for companies with positive three-month earnings-per-share estimate revisions. He searched for positive quarterly earnings momentum, including one quarter of forward earnings. Mr. Tam looked for companies that have had a recent positive quarterly earnings surprise. Mr. Tam also searched for companies that have seen share-price gains over the last six months, three months and one month. Mr. Tam's large capitalization stocks showing strong price momentum and short-term earnings growth are CAE, Premium Brands Holdings, Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services, Alimentation Couche-Tard, and Saputo.
