The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that there are lots of good Canadian utilities including Fortis, Emera and Canadian Utilities. The Globe's Gordon Pape writes, however, that if you want to have some U.S.-dollar cash flow, take a look at Southern Co. ($49.14) (all figures U.S.). It is the second-largest energy utility in the U.S., with 44,000 megawatts of generating capacity and 1,500 billion cubic feet of combined natural-gas consumption and throughput volume. It serves nine million electric and gas utility customers in the U.S. Southeast through subsidiaries. The stock hit a high of $54.60 in intraday trading on July 25. Interest-rate concerns have put downward pressure on the stock in recent months. Third-quarter operating revenues were $6.3-billion, compared with $5.4-billion for the same period of 2015, an increase of 16 per cent. The company owns Southern Nuclear, based in Birmingham, Ala. It operates existing nuclear-generating plants in that state and in Georgia and has two new units under construction. Mr. Pape figures the stock is good value at $49. It is trading toward the lower end of its 52-week range of $46 to $54.64, with a trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio of 18.7.
