The Investment Reporter, in its Nov. 4, 2016, issue, comments on Fortis Inc., recently $43.77. The Reporter said buy 30 times from Oct. 15, 1995, to Aug. 5, 2016, at prices ranging from $22.89 to $70.68 (the stock split 4 for 1 on Oct. 12, 2005). Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the 30 buys, the $30,000 position would now be worth a pleasing $85,876. Key stock Fortis, which sells electricity and natural gas, has raised its annual dividend to $1.60 a share from $1.50 a share. The company has been raising its dividend each year since the early 1970s. This makes it a dividend aristocrat, a company that has increased its dividend consecutively for five years. The Reporter expects Fortis to keep increasing its dividends as it expands in the United States. The new dividend rate of $1.60 a share is an attractive 3.7-per-cent yield. Elsewhere in the newsletter, the Reporter advises investors to protect their purchasing power against rising inflation by buying companies that regularly raise dividends, and even more so for retirees.
