The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that most retail investors do not have access to a Bloomberg machine, but with a bit of digging, you can usually find what you need. The Globe's John Heinzl writes that the best place to start your search is the investor-relations section of the company's website. All too often, however, finding detailed dividend information can be frustrating. Consider Fortis. There is a table that shows each 2015 dividend, along with the record and payment date. However, if you want to know when Fortis declared each dividend, you are out of luck. Fortis does have a chart showing dividends going back to 1972, but it is based on annual dividend amounts; the long-term historical data are not broken out quarterly. If you cannot find what you are looking for on a company's website, there are other sources of dividend information. For example, Morningstar.ca is helpful. When you call up a stock quote, click on the "performance" tab and then choose "dividends and splits." You will get a five-year dividend history both graphically (on an annual basis) and in table form (quarterly). The latter includes all of the relevant dates -- declaration, ex dividend, record and payment.
