The Successful Investor, in its November, 2014, issue, says buy Fortis Inc., recently $35. The Investor said buy 17 times from January, 1999, to December, 2010, at prices ranging from $23 to $74 (the stock split 4 for 1 on Oct. 12, 2005). Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the 17 buys, the $17,000 position would now be worth a gratifying $40,005. The electricity provider recently completed its purchase of UNS Energy Corp., which sells power in Arizona. The purchase price of $4.5-billion (U.S.) includes the assumption of $2-billion (U.S.) of UNS's debt. The new operations will add $1.5-billion (U.S.) to Fortis's annual revenues and reduce its reliance on Atlantic Canada. The company is now considering selling or spinning off its Fortis Properties division. This business operates 23 hotels and owns 2.8 million square feet of commercial real estate in Canada. Fortis hopes to complete its review in 2015. The UNS purchase should increase Fortis's projected earnings per share from $1.79 in 2014 to $2.02 in 2015. The stock trades at a reasonable 17.3 times the 2015 estimate. The company pays an annual dividend of $1.28 a share, which is now a 3.7-per-cent yield. Fortis is now a buy.
