Globe's Heinzl sticks with Fortis, iShares for dividend

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition columnist John Heinzl launched his 12-stock portfolio in September, 2012, using an imaginary $50,000. Mr. Heinzl writes his goal was to identify blue-chip stocks whose dividends would grow for years to come. He vowed to do little trading, apart from reinvesting dividends, and he deliberately chose well-established companies that would require minimal monitoring. The model portfolio is faring pretty much as he expected. Since his last update in February, four stocks have announced additional dividend increases. All 11 companies (he also has one exchange-traded fund) have increased their dividends at least twice since the portfolio was launched 21 months ago, and a few have hiked their payments three or four times. Most of the stocks in his model portfolio are higher than when he bought them. The exceptions are Fortis and the iShares S&P/TSX REIT Index ETF, both of which are down slightly. He has no plans to sell either security, because he believes they are attractive long-term investments that provide a dependable income stream. Over all, his model portfolio has gained about 27 per cent from inception through June 20, including reinvested dividends.
