Globe says Enbridge, rivals hear natives have no veto

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says environmental and indigenous opponents of the Kinder Morgan project have a legitimate right to protest, but they do not hold a veto over the project and cannot kill it. The Globe's Ian Bailey writes that Ms. Notley concedes the legitimacy of civil disobedience, but plays down its relevance to the fate of Trans Mountain. The debate has taken on a new urgency since Ottawa approved the project last week. Opponents have pledged to galvanize activism around the project, saying they will risk jail if necessary. As well, court submissions seeking to overturn the National Energy Board's recommendation that the expansion go ahead have already been filed. They include one from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and another from the Squamish Nation. More lawsuits have been promised. Ms. Notley says indigenous people, however, do not have a veto over the project. As for the environmental protests, Ms. Notley says she is "not terribly concerned." She says big protests happen, "then governments make decisions and we turn the page to the next thing." She says she is aiming her advocacy at British Columbians who are open-minded.
