The Vancouver Sun reports in its Saturday edition that Alberta Premier Rachel Notley was quick to get started this week on the challenge of persuading British Columbians about the merits of twinning the Kinder Morgan pipeline through this province. The Sun's Vaughn Palmer says Ms. Notley recalled how the B.C. branch of her party has been divided previously over protection of jobs versus protection of the environment. "It's happened before (that) the NDP in B.C. had to manage a very profound division within its own party," Ms. Notley said, referring to the bitter fight over preservation of Clayoquot Sound in the 1990s. "They're tough conversations, but at the end of the day the values that drive me and the New Democrats are both the need to make real progress on protecting our environment but to do so in a respectful way to working people." Ms. Notley knows whereof she speaks from living and working in B.C. in the 1990s. She was a staffer in the then-NDP government and later a lawyer for one of the unions in the provincial health care sector. As veterans of B.C.'s War In The Woods would attest, the fight over Clayoquot Sound was resolved more in favour of the environmentalists than the forest workers.
