The National Post reports in its Saturday, July 23, edition that the federal government has hastily organized a series of public round tables to discuss its views and opinions on Kinder Morgan Canada's controversial oil pipeline expansion proposal. The Post's Brian Hutchinson writes that oil pipelines are about as popular these days as infectious disease. Another proposed project that would cross British Columbia, Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline, is now at death's door. In Saskatchewan, a Husky Energy pipeline leaked between 200,000 and 250,000 litres of oil into the North Saskatchewan River on Thursday. A Chilliwack gathering Thursday turned into an airing of grievances. For reasons more political than practical, the Liberal government decided to hold 17 round table discussions in various communities, including some, like Chilliwack, which will be directly impacted by the Kinder Morgan expansion, should it proceed. Watching Thursday's lengthy crab-fest, one almost felt sorry for the federally appointed round table panel members. Once their final round table meetings end late next month, the panelists will gather submissions and report back to the federal government.
