The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, June 7, edition that Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi is accusing Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson of fear-mongering over his efforts to block Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline expansion that many in Alberta see as crucial to the province's economic health. The Globe's Shawn McCarthy writes that Mr. Nenshi disputes Mr. Robertson's claim the Enbridge rival's line could put "hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk" in Vancouver. Mr. Nenshi says: "It's probably not helpful to scare people using numbers completely out of context or based on no facts at all. I say let the regulator do its job. This kind of political interference is not in fact helpful." Earlier this year, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre got into a spat with Albertans over TransCanada's proposed Energy East pipeline, which would carry crude across Canada to a refinery and export terminal in Saint John. Mr. Robertson is in Ottawa this week along with first nation leaders to lobby against Kinder's expansion project. Vancouver is also launching a campaign to persuade residents to contact their Members of Parliament to voice their views, counting on an overwhelmingly negative message.
