Van Sun says Enbridge, others await Trudeau's decision

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could not be in a tougher spot when it comes to oil sands pipelines. The Sun's Peter O'Neil writes that Mr. Trudeau has made clear he wants to help Alberta. The province's Premier, Rachel Notley, is explicit about what she wants. "We must get to 'yes' on a pipeline," she told Albertans in a televised address last month. Mr. Trudeau will not be able to afford his ambitious agenda without the huge tax revenues generated by the construction and operation of a major pipeline. There are three on the drawing board -- TransCanada's Energy East, Kinder Morgan's twinning of its existing line to Burnaby and Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway. Mr. Trudeau won 17 of British Columbia's 42 seats, most in Metro Vancouver, and 40 of Quebec's 78. The B.C. public's views toward pipelines is mostly opposed in those urban ridings. That has led to speculation the government would be open to approval of Northern Gateway if the company agrees to move its proposed terminal from Kitimat to Prince Rupert. A coastal first nations group adamantly maintains that the pipeline would present a "threat to our cultures, environment and economy."
