FP says Enbridge, rival see Grits change stance

The Financial Post reports in its Monday, Feb. 1, edition that in December, 2013, when the National Energy Board effectively kicked Enbridge's Northern Gateway plan curbside, the Tories were mum. The Post's Michael Den Tandt writes that Justin Trudeau presented himself as the one leader who would help Alberta's economy by furthering pipelines within the context of a new environmental regime that would be fair and transparent. Liberals will argue this is just what they have done. Mr. Den Tandt says that might hold some water, but for the accompanying rhetorical transmutation, which has the Grits opposing the evils of unrestrained Big Oil. Officially, the Grits have gone from insisting pipelines are good for Canada's economic health, to a stance of benign indifference, that of a "referee." No one familiar with TransCanada's Keystone XL debate will fail to interpret this as other than a sop to pipeline opponents, whose endgame is not sustainable development but the effective shutdown of Alberta. Few familiar with Mr. Trudeau's early leadership campaign will fail to perceive it as anything but a shift away from the politics of pragmatism, made possible by his overwhelming victory last Oct. 19.
