The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made Canada's dysfunctional pipeline regulatory system worse, and potentially impregnable. The Post's Peter Foster comments that Grit reforms add to the hundreds of millions of dollars that pipeline firms have poured into gaining regulatory approval. Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr and Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna say the reforms were needed to "restore public confidence." Mr. Foster says claims of a supposedly newfound reliance on "evidence" and "science" becomes almost satirical when leading "scientists" have declared that the oil sands represent a "toxic sacrifice zone," that bitumen pipelines represent "game over for the planet," and that their contents are cancer-causing, metal-eating "Frankencrude." Canadian Energy Pipeline Association president Chris Bloomer says the industry never believed the National Energy Board process was "broken." Mr. Foster says the process has been hijacked by those who believe "nothing should be built." He says none of the proposed reforms will make a difference to global climate. Then again, none of this is about climate, it is really about power.
