The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Alberta's new climate change policy should help the oil and gas sector in its quest for new pipelines, says Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr.
The Globe's Jeffrey Jones and Kelly Cryderman write that Mr. Carr told energy executives on Wednesday the federal Liberal government understands the industry's need for investment certainty, assuring them pipelines that are already under review will not have to start from scratch as regulations are updated. Details on a "transition phase" for these regulatory reviews, however, are yet to come.
On Sunday, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley unveiled a carbon tax and a cap on oil sands emissions. She was joined by prominent oil executives and environmentalists. Mr. Carr met with executives from Imperial Oil, Nexen Energy and Canadian Natural Resources, as well the heads of pipeline companies TransCanada, Kinder Morgan Canada and Enbridge. Mr. Carr said they told him their priorities are bolstering access to markets and having the regulatory certainty that would ensure they can still attract capital.
The industry is worried about the new government's intentions for more stringent regulatory reviews for pipelines.
