The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, Aug. 15, edition that representatives of Alberta's oil patch will help develop Alberta's climate change policy, the NDP government announced Friday. The Post's Geoffrey Morgan writes that Alberta's Environment and Parks Minister Shannon Phillips said the province's climate change panel would include a current Enbridge executive, a former Suncor Energy executive, a Pembina Institute director and the educational director of Unifor in Fort McMurray. Headed by business and economics professor Andrew Leach, the five-person panel will host meetings across the province in September and then deliver policy recommendations to the government on phasing out coal-fired electricity generation and reducing carbon emissions. Ms. Phillips stopped short of providing targets for emissions reductions, saying that introducing new climate change goals is premature as the panel has not yet delivered its recommendations. She said, "In the past, we've had commitments to targets that have not been credible." Asked whether the panel will determine the province's emissions reductions targets, Ms. Phillips said, "They're going to be giving us a series of options."
