The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition the Canadian Energy Strategy approved by provincial premiers Friday fails to mention that Canada's future lies with the oil sands. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes instead, the document puts climate change and the environment front and centre, renewable energy on a pedestal. It does mention the need for new energy infrastructure, but the idea comes deep into the document, and the words "bitumen," or "oil sands" are not even mentioned. There was no acknowledgement, either, of all the innovation and spending that is already taking place to improve the environmental impact of oil and gas extraction. The strategy's priorities include energy efficiency, new and improved transportation, greenhouse gas reduction and transition to a lower carbon economy, technology, and innovation. Speaking to reporters Friday, premiers were more explicitly supportive of pipelines. The feds refused to participate in the discussions about a national energy strategy. The resulting document is not intrusive, but it does not do the Alberta oil industry favours, either. Like previous efforts, it is the outcome of a variety of interest groups pushing for their shopping list.
