The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition the mood in the oil industry remains hyperanxious after the Alberta election. Post columnist Peter Foster writes there are good reasons to be afraid. Rachel Notley's NDP government is filled with lefty neophytes who will put the boots to an oil industry hit by hard times at the worst possible moment. Ms. Notely is also mulling hikes to royalties and greenhouse gas emissions levies. Mr. Foster advises Ms. Notley to follow the example of Manitoba's fiscally conservative former NDP premier Gary Doer, now ambassador to the United States. Mr. Doer has spent years knocking his head against the impregnable opposition of President Obama to Keystone XL. Ms. Notley has claimed that she supports Keystone XL, which is encouraging, but she has also said that she will not push for Northern Gateway. Polling indicates the election reflected a cooling to PC premier Jim Prentice rather than a warming to Ms. Notley. The Alberta public appears overwhelmingly in favour of new pipeline development. It is particularly encouraging that 65 per cent of NDP voters want Ms. Notley to support Keystone XL, 79 per cent to back pipelines to the east and 69 per cent those to the west.
