The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that growing aboriginal opposition to important proposed energy projects has many wondering if there is a better way. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes that the Economic Club of Canada, in partnership with Alberta Senator Doug Black, is hosting a series of discussions to come up with a possible answer: a set of principles for establishing partnerships or earning consent between government, industry, first nations and legitimate environmental interests so projects can move forward. Meanwhile, as a show of good faith, Mr. Black is urging all parties to put litigation on hold. Mr. Black wants to "facilitate conversation that leads to action, so we are not sitting around, 15 years from now, asking: 'What were we doing?'" Though independent, the Prime Minister's Office and Canada's Natural Resources Minister are aware of the effort. Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline, the expansion of the TransMountain oil pipeline, TransCanada's Energy East oil pipeline, fracking for gas in New Brunswick, development of Alberta's oil sands are struggling with aboriginal opposition. Mr. Black says the loss to the Canadian economy is in the trillions of dollars.
