The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that while snubbing oil pipelines and touting liquefied natural gas, British Columbia is now in a tough spot. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes that the fuel embraced by the Liberal government of Christy Clark, which was supposed to be acceptable to B.C.'s green/aboriginal/nimby cohort, has landed on the unwanted pile, next to Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway. The boot came this week from the Lax Kw'alaams First Nation which voted against Malaysia's Petronas's plan to build the Pacific NorthWest LNG project. While disappointed, LNG proponents, about 20 of them, are not giving up. The rejection is reminiscent of the plebiscite held by the town of Kitimat a year ago on Enbridge's Gateway. It, too, got the thumbs down. The Gateway project remains in limbo despite receiving government approval. For sure, LNG proponents and the Lax Kw'alaams could still find common ground. Yet their reaction reinforces the growing view that building large energy projects in Canada is increasingly hopeless. Ms. Clark helped create the mess by giving lots of rope to opponents of oil pipelines while cherry-picking the LNG business, and now faces getting neither.
