The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the NDP win in Alberta has made investors nervous. The Post's Martin Pelletier writes that the NDP platform is a bit short on substance. To be fair, the PCs called a snap election hoping to take advantage of the other parties' lack of preparedness. So it is understandable if the NDP government needs time to develop a policy toward the energy sector. There will be a 2-per-cent corporate tax hike, which the energy sector can easily handle. The costs of new environmental policies and potential royalty changes remain unclear. National Bank Financial says if the existing royalty incentives were eliminated and flat royalty rates of 30 per cent on oil and 20 per cent on natural gas were implemented, it would raise the break even price of oil by about $10 to $60 per barrel and by 55 cents on natural gas to $2.60 per 1,000 cubic feet. On the environment side, not having a provincial policy may have played a contributing factor in holding up the approval of TransCanada's Keystone pipeline in addition to all of the protests against Enbridge's Gateway pipeline. Mr. Pelletier hopes smart common-sense policy will prevail and that orange is indeed the new black.
