The National Post reports in its Monday edition that no sooner had the first sheen of oil been spotted on the waters of Vancouver's English Bay than people began proclaiming that any chance of building Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway pipeline was gone. A Post editorial says it is absurd to think that a minor fuel leak could derail a project of such strategic importance. Canada's petroleum resources remain a tremendous source of wealth, one in which the whole country shares. The Post says it favours pipelines. The Post says Canadians have only themselves to blame for the failure to get Gateway built. Notwithstanding the National Energy Board's positive ruling, the consensus view is that Gateway is dead -- not by any process of law, but for lack of "social licence." Part of the blame goes to British Columbia's unwarranted meddling in the process. The Post says first nations have legal rights that cannot be denied or ignored. The Post says the anti-oil movement has none. The greens have had their say, and the NEB has ruled. As a result, the legal basis for building Gateway is clear. Gateway's futures should not be in doubt. The Post says the adjudicated matter should not be so casually set aside.
