The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the outlook for the B.C. LNG sector appears bright. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes that while Alberta's oil companies are axing spending, proponents of liquefied natural gas in British Columbia are in buildup mode.
BC LNG Alliance (BCLA) president David Keane says the volatility in the oil market "masks a tremendous opportunity in B.C. That's why companies have already made considerable investments," even before announcing final decisions to go ahead.
Mr. Keane says a final decision by one of his group's members is now expected this year.
The oil slump that has resulted in large layoffs across Alberta is also improving the case for LNG.
The oil downturn has also pushed down prices of materials required to build projects, helping improve costs.
With proposed bitumen pipelines such as Enbridge's Northern Gateway stoking opposition to energy projects and new tanker traffic in general, BCLA started a 12-week advertising campaign Monday to improve understanding of the LNG sector
A West Coast LNG start-up will be positively viewed in Alberta because it would boost its gas industry and, hopefully, improve B.C.'s comfort with energy projects.
