The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition Kinder Morgan says its proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion has support from 20 aboriginal communities along the $5.4-billion project's 1,100-kilometre route. The Sun's Derrick Penner writes company president Ian Anderson said it has reached "mutual benefit agreements" with 20 first nations, seven directly on the pipeline's path, which include measures for "prosperity sharing." Mr. Anderson declined to disclose which communities have signed, "to respect the confidentiality" of agreements. Mr. Anderson added that the company is still in discussions with 30 to 40 other first nations "between Edmonton and Sooke (on Vancouver Island)," and he is confident that by the way conversations are going, the company will strike similar deals with "the vast majority" later this year. "We don't go in with a set proposal, there are not take-it-or-leave it conversations," he said of the agreements. In contrast, Enbridge offered equity agreements to first nations within a defined package, including deadlines for acceptance, as part of its Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. Additionally, Mr. Anderson said the company has signed other 74 agreements with communities.
