The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition proponents of Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline have been tireless in touting the project as a route to economic development and job creation. The Sun's Vaughn Palmer writes workers have not broken ground, but the project has still brought joy to the legal profession. The latest challenge brings the total number of lawsuits to 19. Think what that will entail in terms of billable hours and disbursements for research, experts on retainer, examinations for discovery and transcript preparation, and clerical work at myriad B.C. law firms. Never mind the gainful employment for however many judges and support workers if all 19 cases actually proceed to court. Then there is the activity generated by the overlapping Enbridge regulatory process. Granted, Enbridge is a special case: a much-hated company with a dubious record that botched its early opportunities to build support with communities, first nations and the public. However, there is no lack of other examples of projects threatened by litigation in this province. In all, $25-billion worth of resource development and infrastructure projects are tied up by three dozen legal challenges of one kind or another.
